Staff Selection Commission calculates shorthand skill test evaluation through a two-step standardized mathematical formula.
Calculate Total Mistakes
Add the number of Full Mistakes to half the number of Half Mistakes:
Example: 14 Full Mistakes + 10 Half Mistakes = 14 + (10 / 2) = 19 Total Mistakes.
Calculate Mistake Percentage (%)
Divide the Total Mistakes by the total number of words in the dictation, multiplied by 100:
Example (Grade D, 800 words): (19 / 800) × 100 = 2.375% Mistake Rate.
Full Mistakes vs. Half Mistakes Breakdown

If you type an existing dictionary English word in place of the dictated word (e.g. typing "their" instead of "there", "accept" instead of "except", "affect" instead of "effect", or "hope" instead of "hop"), it is counted as a Full Mistake (Substitution) and NOT a Half Mistake spelling error!
Full Mistakes
1.0 Mark Penalty per Error- 1Omission of Words or Figures
Every omitted word or figure dictated. If a group of 4 words is missed, it counts as 4 Full Mistakes.
Dictated: "We must protect our environment"
Typed: "We must our environment"(Missed 'protect' = 1 Full Mistake) - 2Substitution of Wrong Word / Figure
Replacing a dictated word with an entirely different word or figure.
Dictated: "Indian Constitution"
Typed: "Indian Institution" (= 1 Full Mistake) - 3Addition of Extra Words or Figures
Inserting extra words, articles ('a', 'an', 'the'), or numbers not present in the original dictation.
Dictated: "Honourable Speaker said"
Typed: "The Honourable Speaker said"(Added 'The' = 1 Full Mistake) - 4Untyped / Incomplete Matter
Any portion of dictation left un-transcribed on the computer terminal is counted as Full Mistakes for every missing word.
Half Mistakes
0.5 Mark Penalty per Error- 1Spelling Errors & Letter Typos
Misspelling, transposition, omission, or extra letter in a word that does not form another dictionary word.
Dictated: "Government Commission"
Typed: "Goverment Comission" (= 2 Half Mistakes) - 2Singular / Plural Errors
Typing singular for plural or vice-versa.
Dictated: "All candidates must attend"
Typed: "All candidate must attend" (= 1 Half Mistake) - 3Capitalization Errors
Failing to capitalize proper nouns or sentence openings, or capitalizing common words midway.
Dictated: "Parliament in New Delhi"
Typed: "parliament in new delhi"(= Half Mistakes for 'p' and 'n'/'d') - 4Spacing, Split & Joined Words
Missing spaces between words or splitting single words.
Typed: "inwhich" (for 'in which') or "with out"(for 'without') = Half Mistake - 5Full Stop (.) Omission & Punctuation
Missing full stop at the end of a sentence or adding an unwarranted full stop in between.
